        Album Description

"The Sidewalk Ends" is packed with interesting and engaging work, from the spareness of the love song "Higher Ground" to the rap and tight syncopation of "Genepool." Melodrome remembers that even though the machines can cook up a lot of magic, the human voice, left to its own, as in the natural and lovely "Two Into One," can't be matched. In song after song Baier and company tease out appealing new sounds, rhythms and feelings. The retro "Sex, Cash & Fuel" has the spunk of an old James Gang song. "Love Replaces Love" is wonderfully spooky and strange. Overall, the disc is rich on atmospherics and invention, but not to excess. At its heart, "The Sidewalk Ends" is a round peg for the round hole of rock, even if it needs a bit of body English to slide it in. Like Beck, Baier shows an ability to masquerade as someone else, but do so with dead-on accuracy and credibility. It's a disguise, you know, but oh my, how well it fits.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sort of like a Porsche on the open road., September 21, 2003

At first, intriguing. You have the keys, and apparent permission, so you climb inside and shut the door. Sticking the keys into the ignition, you turn it on--or it turn's you on--you're not quite sure, and it's too early to tell anyway. Now, there is an obvious rush of adrenaline as you watch the needle rise, and it is, in fact, the payoff you were hoping for. But, alas, even a Porsche knows that on the open road it must find a comfortable pace, a place in which to glide and flow without tackeling the miles in an aggressive manner, but, rather, allowing the destination to come on it's own as intended, guided only by the terms you set. That, my friends, is exactly what this record feels like--a high-performance, fuel injected slow ride. A glossy paint job with tinted windows coupled with an attitude that is confident in the power of a purr. Like a Porsche, it knows that you know...and, frankly, that's the real payoff.

Always great when you can buy something before it hits the mainstream and feel like you were a part of it when it was just starting out. This record is destined to be a classic if not on a global scale then on the scale of ....like a Nick Drake or some other artist that we look back on and go....why were they never big. I'm beginning to like it when artists only get to be a certain level of famous. Robby Baier as a solo artist is being called the male version of Ani Difranco, this new band of his solidifies his place in my eyes as a unique talent and one that will be giving us great songs to listen to for years to come. It doesn't hurt that he lives in Western Mass my home town. At any rate the record is pretty darn cool for something that isn't a major label release, self produced and doesn't have ClearChannel giving away Rolex's to DJ's for playing it, buy it, you'll like it I promise.

            Album Description

The band began work on the album as media coverage of an impending attack on Iraq began to escalate last March. "Play America" was recorded at Woodstock's famed Applehead Recording Studio, and mastered at Sterling Sound by Chris Gehringer. "We decided to make a six song record on purpose," says guitarist and frontman Robby Baier. "This way, we could say exactly what we wanted without the message getting lost among other songs on a full length CD."
